Amazing! You have been accepted to the Academy of Fine Arts! And now what?
Get your Student ID: Pre-register first at Akademie online campus.akbild.ac.at, complete your enrolment by uploading the required documents. Find more specifics on the Academy website. If you struggle to find the right information, ask the student assistants of your class for help, or your colleagues. Also, don't wait for October to take care of these things.
Welcome Bag: Go to the Student Welcome Center to get the welcome bag and learn about the Academy's policies.
Orientation Program: The Student Welcome Center organizes a diverse program to orientate yourself when you're at the Academy. Participate!
Socialise with other students: Look at posters in the hallways and elevators to find out about student exhibitions in and outside of the Academy. Go to parties organized by different classes and the ÖH (student union).
Food: Check out the Academy Mensa at Schillerplatz and cheap places nearby. There is also a Spar and a Billa close to Schillerplatz. Also, use the drink machine at ÖH. Special tip: As a student, you're allowed to shop at so-called social markets all over Vienna.
E-mail list: Sign up for the e-mail list and check your e-mails every day, as well as the Academy's website. You'll receive information about your courses, your class, and diverse funding options, programs, and applications. Even if there's a lot of mails, check them regularly.
Register to courses: Check out the curriculum for your studies and which courses are required. It might be all very confusing in the beginning, but you will get the hang of it. Here are some recommendations for the first semester:
Ringvorlesung is a great way to get to know different departments and topics that you can dive into during your time as a student.
If you need to learn German, Academy provides free German courses from A1 to B1. If you don't speak German yet, there are a broad variety of English courses you can do.
And last but not least, take care of yourself. The beginning of a new study can be very overwhelming. Be patient, also with yourself. And don't forget to do things beside your studies that give you joy and help you relax. If you find yourself needing support, don't be shy to ask other students or contact the Student Welcome Center or the ÖH. The Academy also provides psychological counseling for students.
