Living in Vienna: How and where to look?
Author: Rogin Mougoui (Red)
Are you moving to Vienna for your studies and don't know where to start with your apartment search? Here are some helpful tips!
Basically, you have the following options:
-
Shared apartment (WG) – A popular choice among students, as it is often cheaper and gives you the chance to meet new people quickly. (approx. €300 to €600)
-
Student dormitory – An uncomplicated option with furnished rooms and communal areas. (from €300)
-
Private apartment – The most expensive, but the most independent choice. (from approx. €600)
-
Intergenerational housing – A special living arrangement where you live with older people in exchange for lower rent. (from €250)
Tips for Apartment Hunting:
-
Start early: Especially for student dorms, there are often long waiting times – it’s worth signing up early!
-
Keep an eye on last-minute offers: Spontaneous availabilities are often posted on listing platforms.
-
Turn on notifications: Many platforms offer apps with push notifications so you don’t miss new offers.
-
Be cautious of scams: Never share sensitive information carelessly – always double-check and research!
-
No advance payments: Serious landlords will not ask for money before you’ve signed the contract.
-
View the apartment in person: To avoid unpleasant surprises.
-
Plan for a security deposit: It can be up to three months' rent.
-
Rent price: The rent is typically made up of the net rent plus operating costs. Heating and electricity are additional costs.
-
Household insurance: It is recommended in Austria to take out household insurance for your apartment or shared apartment (about €10 per month).

If you have already lived in Vienna for two years and have Austrian citizenship (or an equivalent entitlement), you can apply for a so-called Wiener Wohn-Ticket. With this, you can find apartments through the Housing Advisory Service Vienna. This includes SMART apartments, subsidized new-build and renovated apartments, and municipal housing. More information can be found on the website of Wohnberatung Wien (Housing Advisory Service Vienna).

If you have reserved a room in a student dormitory, you will receive an official confirmation for your visa or residence permit. Therefore, these student dormitories are especially recommended for international students who are applying for a visa or residence permit for the first time.
