Educational Pathways

From Stuttgart to Vienna to Study

Author: Antje Lehn (UGC)

I did my A-levels in Germany and in upper secondary school I was interested in art, math, and languages. I wanted to study, but I couldn’t decide which direction to take. That’s why I started a whole lot of subjects that I didn’t want to study.

While on vacation, I met a woman from Berlin who told me about her architecture studies. The subject of architecture seemed to combine all my interests perfectly. After an internship at an architecture firm, I was absolutely sure that I wanted to study architecture and applied to the University of Stuttgart. After my undergraduate degree, I heard from fellow students that a lot was happening architecturally in Vienna. I then applied to the Angewandte there. I spent a year in the architecture class and worked for an architect. I got to know a lot of people during that time. I then went back to Germany and completed my studies.

My first job took me to Munich, then I spent six months in London. I finally ended up back in Vienna because I had contacts here and thought that this city offered prospects for the future. Shortly after the birth of my first child, by chance I heard about a job vacancy at the Academy of Fine Arts and applied. More than 20 years later, I’m still working here.
