Studying Restoration: Amelie’s Decision

Author: Anoshenkova (UGC)

A student explains why she decided to study Conservation and Restoration.

“Combining knowledge and craftsmanship” A student story from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Meet Amelie: she is 22 years old and studies Conservation and Restoration, specializing in the restoration of paintings and sculptures.

“I wanted a course where I could work with my hands but also gain deep knowledge – restoration was exactly the right choice.”

Why Restoration?

After two years of internships, Amelie was certain: this is her path. The combination of technique, history, and cultural value convinced her. “I love how theory and practice go hand in hand – it’s meaningful and tangible at the same time.”

Why Vienna?

The location was just as important to Amelie as the study program. “Vienna has something calling about it. I had other options, but this academy just felt right.”

What Makes the Program Special?

Unlike many universities in Germany, the Academy combines the restoration of paintings and sculptures within one department: “Elsewhere, you often have to choose between paintings or wooden sculpture – here, we learn both.” Traditional techniques are part of the curriculum too: “We even learn gilding – I really enjoy that!”

Studying in a Supportive Community

Amelie especially values the close-knit group dynamic: “Everyone knows each other. We help one another with exams and assignments – it really makes a difference.” This network helps not only with studying, but also with future job opportunities.

Final Thoughts

A practical program, an inspiring city, and a strong community – Amelie’s journey shows that restoration can be more than just a study path: it can become a true calling.

Tip for future students:

“Enjoy your time here and talk to everyone – the connections you build will help you a lot.”
