The Project "A trojan duck"

Author: Jakob Grabher (UGC)

In the summer of 2023, I was part of a four-person mediation team that supervised a two-week architecture workshop in Tyrol for kids. The summer school took place in Söll and Kirchberg in Tyrol. Around 20 children aged between eight and twelve from villages took part each week. The idea was to create a mobile workshop on a old trailer.

We challenged and encouraged the children's creativity with various tasks. These included daily drawing exercises, building furniture from roof battens and wooden planks, and models of experimental architecture.

The mobile workshop can be used in different ways depending on the situation. Several movable elements enable different work situations. There are two fold-out work tables and a height-adjustable sunshade. A walk-on raised platform functions both as a quiet place to think and as a viewing tower. Naturally, storage space for materials and tools has also been included.

The two-week event was organized by Netzwerk Handwerk, an association of local craft businesses and bilding, an art and architecture school from Innsbruck, with the aim of getting children interested in crafts.

I myself joined the project through an open call from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, aimed at students interested in educational work.

The pictures show insights of the process. From the drawing exercise, furniture construction and exhibition to the assembly of the workshop on the trolley.
