How Did the Online Platform Get the Name Kiosk?
Author: Antje Lehn (UGC)
About halfway through the project, we realized that our project title “Platform Vielfalt” wasn’t ideal as a name for the online communication platform. So we looked for a name that embodied the project idea and would appeal to the target groups.
A creative process began. We worked in conjunction with the company visuelles - Büro für Strategie, Design & Digitales.
The first suggestion for a name of the new platform came quickly – “Mein Kunststudium.” But how does that sound in English? After some back-and-forthing and a brainstorming workshop, the name “Kiosk” came up as a name for the project’s online platform. The word kiosk is known in many languages. It was imported into French from Persian through the Ottomans and entered the German language in the 18th century – originally being used to describe a garden pavilion.
Today, a small booth with a window is called a kiosk; the word can evoke different things. Many people think of a small store where you can get what you need and have direct contact with someone, or an uncomplicated exchange of information. A kiosk is like a small house, easily accessible, a public place, a meeting point, and a space in between.
