Mobile Atelier de Recherche for legitimate and illegitimate Arts at the University of Arts Linz
Author: Amalia Barboza (UGC)
With the "Mobile Atelier de Recherche" project, the University of Arts Linz offers an opportunity for young people at secondary schools who are not aiming for a school-leaving certificate to get them interested in studying art.
With the aim of including children and young people from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, Prof. Amalia Barboza (Department of Artistic Knowledge Practices, University of Arts Linz) developed a mobile studio to explore the creative practices of secondary school students using artistic research strategies. The aim of the project is to interest young people in studying art, who are not aiming for a high school diploma.
To achieve this, we connect mobile offers directly to secondary schools. In the mobile studio, not only are the "legitimate (recognized) arts" that can be studied at the University of Arts presented with practical exercises, but other "illegitimate arts" that come from the creative everyday practices of the young people themselves are also explored. In this way, the project aims to draw attention to the creative practices of young people in order to make them aware that it is precisely this creativity and their expertise that is sought after at the University of Arts.
The project started in 2021 in cooperation with the secondary school Mittelschule 1 Haid and a workshop by the artist Gottfried Binder. The resulting works were presented in a publication.
In 2022, the project was further developed and concluded with a presentation by the pupils at the University of Arts Linz.
The Nomadic Studio project was continued in 2023, this time in cooperation with the Otto Glöckel School and guest artist Michael Wittmann.
The project will be continued in May 2024 with a workshop by guest artist Franziska Wirtensohn in cooperation with the Otto Glöckel School.
The Mobile Atelier and the cooperation with secondary schools reach people who previously had no access to art universities due to biographical, social or cultural backgrounds.
Images from the documentation (booklets) of the first two workshops (Gottfried Binder 2021-22 and Michael Wittmann 2023) can be seen here. The booklets were designed by Gottfried Binder.
